Why Tracking Your IT Skills Matters
When breaking into IT, it's easy to feel overwhelmed by everything there is to learn. Certifications, hands-on labs, troubleshooting skills—how do you know if you’re making progress? That's where tracking your IT skills comes in.
For me, tracking my learning helps me:
✔ Stay organized – Keeping track of what I’ve learned vs. what I need to study.
✔ Identify gaps – Knowing which areas need improvement.
✔ Showcase my expertise – Creating a portfolio that proves my skills to employers.
✔ Stay motivated – Seeing progress over time keeps me moving forward!

How I’m Tracking My IT Skills & Tools
Right now, I’m using a Google Docs-based tracker to document everything I learn. This helps me keep a running log of tools, concepts, and hands-on experience in different areas like:
🔹 CompTIA A+ (1101 & 1102) – Hardware, networking, troubleshooting, security.
🔹 Cybersecurity Fundamentals – IAM, MFA, cloud security best practices.
🔹 Hands-on Tools – Wireshark, Nmap, AWS IAM, and more.
🔹 Real-world Troubleshooting – Any issues I solve on my devices or for others.
Example: My IT Tool Mastery Tracker
Here’s a simple template I created in Google Docs to track my IT skills:
What You Can Do with This Tracker:
✅ Log the IT tools & skills you’re learning (Wireshark, AWS IAM, Linux CLI, etc.)
✅ Categorize them by Networking, Security, Cloud, OS, and more
✅ Record what you’ve already learned and what’s next
✅ Keep important resources & links in one place
📌 Make a copy for yourself and start tracking your IT journey today!
Final Thoughts: Progress Over Perfection
Tracking my IT skills is helping me turn learning into real expertise. I encourage you to start your own tracker—even if it’s just a simple doc—to see your progress and stay accountable.
